THE HARROWING OF HELL ... scrapbook in progress
THE
HARROWING OF HELL is a bit of Christian theology that wasn’t talked about much while
I was at school, each of my schools in Malmesbury being under the guardianship
of the Anglican Church.
However,
for many people in other churches, the Saturday before Easter Sunday, sometimes
called Easter Eve, the full day that stands between the Crucifixion and the
Resurrection, is an occasion of much ceremony, both mournful and rejoicing.
This is the
day when Christ is supposed to have descended, briefly, in to Hell.
For
artists, it was a subject offering great scope for their imaginations.
Albrecht Durer made two prints of this subject.
