if you were to make your way to the musee d'orsay nowadays, you could hardly see this picture for the moving throng of international visitors
but they are not pilgrims
they pause for a few seconds to take a quick picture
hundreds in turn will stand besides the painting with two fingers raised besides their ears
not many encounter the painting itself, or know, or care ...
and so i wept, but only for a few seconds
